Fly Screens for Homes: Fresh Air Without the Insects

There is nothing better than opening the doors onto the garden on a warm day. That is, until the flies follow you inside.

Open windows and doors can cool a warm kitchen, make a conservatory more comfortable and bring fresh air into your living space. Unfortunately, they can also provide an easy route inside for flies, moths, wasps and other insects.

Made-to-measure fly screens for homes allow fresh air to circulate while creating a physical barrier across open windows and doors. When the fly screen is no longer required, it retracts neatly out of the way.

We have recently fitted Blind Screen® fly screens in homes in Geddington, Towcester, Northampton and Wollaston. These four installations demonstrate how the same specialist system can be adapted to very different windows and garden doors.

What Is a Blind Screen® Fly Screen?

We supply and fit Blind Screen® fly screens using Breeze In™ fly-screen fabric.

Blind Screen® is a made-to-measure retractable screening system for windows and doors. Breeze In™ is its specialist insect-screen fabric, designed to allow fresh air through while helping to keep flies and other unwanted insects outside.

The fine fabric maintains visibility through the opening without unnecessarily blocking natural light. When the fly screen is not needed, it retracts into a slim cassette, leaving the window or doorway clear.

Blind Screen® systems can be produced for different types and sizes of opening. They can also be fitted to many existing windows and doors without requiring structural alterations.

Why Do Fly Screens Need to Be Made to Measure?

Doors and windows vary considerably between homes. Even two openings that appear similar can have different frames, handles, hinges and opening directions.

Before recommending a fly-screen system, we assess:

  • The width and height of the opening
  • Whether it is a window, single door or double doorway
  • How the window or door opens
  • The position of its handles, hinges and frames
  • The available fitting space
  • How frequently people need to use the opening
  • Where the screen will sit when it is retracted

A screen fitted across a wide set of garden doors requires a different specification from several individual screens fitted to smaller windows.

Professional measuring ensures that the system is designed for the property and for the way the homeowner uses the opening.

A Wide Garden-Door Fly Screen in Geddington

At this home in Geddington, the living area has a wide, glazed opening leading directly onto the patio and garden.

Opening the glazed door brings fresh air into the room and provides easy garden access. However, the complete opening is considerably wider than the active door itself.

We measured and specified a Blind Screen® fly screen to cover the wider aperture. When it is in use, the Breeze In™ fabric creates a barrier across the opening while preserving the view of the patio and garden beyond.

The existing door can remain open behind the fly screen, allowing air to circulate without leaving the doorway completely open to flies and other insects.

The slim white frame fits neatly within the existing surround and coordinates with the glazed doors. When the fly screen is no longer needed, it retracts neatly into its cassette, leaving the opening clear.

This installation demonstrates that a practical fly screen does not need to interrupt the connection between a room and its garden. The fine fabric remains discreet while doing a very useful job.

Individual Window Fly Screens in Towcester

The Towcester installation presented a completely different requirement.

Rather than screening a doorway, we fitted separate made-to-measure fly screens to several opening windows within a larger glazed wall.

Each opening has its own screen, allowing the homeowner to open individual windows whenever additional ventilation is required. In the photograph, the centre window is visibly open behind the Breeze In™ fly-screen fabric.

Fitting separate screens to the opening sections provides a tailored solution without unnecessarily covering the surrounding fixed glazing.

Accurate measuring was essential because each fly-screen frame needed to sit neatly within the wider structure and operate with the existing window.

This example demonstrates that domestic fly screens are not limited to doors. Individual window screens can provide useful ventilation in glazed rooms and other areas where heat can build up.

A Conservatory Door Fly Screen in Northampton

At this Northampton home, we fitted a Blind Screen® fly screen across an external conservatory door.

Conservatories benefit from plenty of natural light, but they can become warm when the sun is shining. Opening an external door can improve ventilation quickly, although it also creates a large opening through which insects can enter.

The made-to-measure fly screen covers the complete doorway while the existing glazed door remains open behind it. Fresh air can enter the conservatory, and the garden remains visible through the fine Breeze In™ fabric.

The white frame coordinates neatly with the existing conservatory structure, creating an integrated finish.

When completely clear access is required, the fly screen retracts neatly into its slim cassette. The system was fitted to the existing structure without requiring the surrounding conservatory doors or windows to be replaced.

A Double-Door Fly Screen in Wollaston

The installation in Wollaston shows how fly screens can also be adapted for a pair of glazed garden doors.

Both doors can be opened to connect the room with the outdoor seating area. We fitted a made-to-measure system that covers the full width of the double doorway, with the fly-screen fabric meeting neatly in the centre.

This centre-closing arrangement suits the wider opening and allows both sides of the doorway to be screened.

The fine fabric maintains the view towards the garden and allows fresh air into the room. The slim white Blind Screen® frame also coordinates with the existing door surround and interior.

The result is a practical fly screen across a wide garden entrance without permanently covering the glass or changing how the doors are used.

Which Doors and Windows Can Have Fly Screens?

Blind Screen® fly screens can be specified for many different domestic openings, including:

  • Individual opening windows
  • Single external doors
  • Double and French doors
  • Patio doors
  • Bi-fold doors
  • Wide glazed garden openings
  • Conservatories and glazed extensions

The appropriate system will depend on the dimensions and configuration of the opening, how it operates and how it is used by the household.

A free measuring appointment allows us to assess these details and recommend the most suitable Blind Screen® system.

What Are the Benefits of Fly Screens at Home?

The main benefit is simple: you can enjoy fresh air with fewer flies and other insects entering your home.

Made-to-measure retractable fly screens can also help you:

  • Leave doors open onto the garden more comfortably
  • Ventilate kitchens, living rooms and conservatories
  • Maintain natural light
  • Retain visibility through the opening
  • Keep the doorway or window clear when the screen is retracted
  • Avoid a permanent obstruction across the glass
  • Achieve a neat finish tailored to the existing frame

Because the system is retractable, it remains ready whenever it is needed without having to stay across the window or doorway throughout the year.

Why Professional Measuring and Fitting Matter

Our installations in Geddington, Towcester, Northampton and Wollaston all use Breeze In™ fly-screen fabric, but the finished solutions are not identical.

One needed to span a wide glazed opening, another involved several individual windows, the third covered a conservatory door and the fourth required a centre-closing system across double doors.

Correct specification ensures that the fly screen:

  • Suits the size and type of opening
  • Works with the direction of the doors or windows
  • Accommodates existing handles, hinges and frames
  • Does not unnecessarily restrict access
  • Retracts into a practical position
  • Has a neat and accurately fitted finish

Frequently Asked Questions About Fly Screens for Homes

Do fly screens reduce airflow?

Breeze In™ fly-screen fabric is designed to allow air to pass through while providing a physical barrier against flies and other insects.

Can fly screens be fitted to existing doors and windows?

Yes. Blind Screen® systems can be fitted to many existing doors and windows without structural alterations. Each opening must be assessed to determine the appropriate fitting arrangement.

Are fly screens suitable for conservatories?

Yes. Fly screens can be fitted to suitable conservatory windows and doors, providing ventilation while helping to keep insects outside.

Do Blind Screen® fly screens retract?

Yes. When the screen is not required, it retracts neatly into a slim cassette, leaving the window or doorway clear.

Are fly screens only useful in summer?

Flies and other insects are generally more noticeable during warmer weather, but homes may require ventilation at different times throughout the year. A retractable fly screen remains available whenever it is needed and stores neatly in its cassette when it is not.

Can you see through fly-screen fabric?

Yes. The fine fabric maintains visibility through the window or doorway, although the mesh remains visible when the screen is in use.

Can you fit a fly screen across double doors?

Yes. A made-to-measure system can be specified for suitable double or French doors. The Wollaston installation uses a centre-closing fly screen across the full doorway.

Can separate opening windows each have a fly screen?

Yes. Our Towcester installation demonstrates how individual fly screens can be fitted to several opening windows within a larger glazed wall.

Do I need to open the fly screen before walking through the doorway?

Yes. When you need to pass through the doorway, the retractable fly screen should be opened to provide clear access. It can then be drawn back across the opening when you want ventilation and insect protection.
