We recently visited a home in Welford to look at a large skylight positioned directly overhead. The glazing allowed plenty of daylight into the room, which was an important part of the space, but the homeowner also wanted the flexibility to cover the skylight when needed.

This wasn’t a conventional window where a standard blind could simply hang in front of the glass. The position and size of the skylight meant the blind needed to remain supported across the opening and provide a neat, practical finish.

For this project, a made-to-measure Blind Screen provided the solution.

The Challenge of Finding a Blind for a Skylight

Choosing a blind for a skylight can be very different from choosing blinds for the windows around your home.

A conventional blind usually hangs vertically at a window. With overhead glazing, the blind needs to work across the opening rather than simply hanging down.

That means choosing the right type of blind and achieving an accurate fit are particularly important.

The blind also needs to be easy to use. There’s little benefit in covering a skylight if the blind is awkward to open and close or doesn’t stay neatly positioned across the glazing.

When we visited the property in Welford, our team was able to measure the skylight, look at the position of the glazing and talk to the homeowner about how they wanted to use the space.

The aim wasn’t to permanently cover the skylight. The natural light was one of its best features.

Instead, the homeowner needed more choice over when that light entered the room.

The photographs from this installation show the difference clearly. With the blind open, the glazing is exposed and natural light can enter freely. With the blind closed, the blind spans the skylight and gives the homeowner greater control over the light coming into the room.

It is a straightforward solution to a window that needed a little more thought.

Enjoying Natural Light with More Control

People choose skylights because they want natural light, so the aim of fitting a blind isn’t necessarily to keep the glazing covered all the time.

The benefit is having a choice.

The amount and angle of daylight entering through a skylight can change throughout the day and at different times of year. Sometimes you may want to enjoy as much natural light as possible. At other times, you may want to reduce the amount of light entering from above.

For this Welford installation, the homeowner can leave the Blind Screen open to enjoy the daylight and draw it across the skylight when greater light control is needed.

The skylight can still fill the room with natural light. The homeowner simply has more control over when the glazing is covered.
