A Flexible Solution for Open-Plan Living
Can You Use a Blind as a Room Divider?
Open-plan living can make a home feel bright, spacious and connected. But sometimes, you may simply want to separate one area from another.
Perhaps you’re cooking and want to create a clear divide between the kitchen and living area. Maybe one person is watching television while somebody else wants to use another part of the space. Or perhaps you simply want a large room to feel a little cosier and more defined.
But what if you don’t want to build a permanent wall or fit internal doors?
A recent Blind Screen installation shows how a made-to-measure blind can be used as a flexible room divider, allowing the homeowner to change how the space feels and functions whenever they need to.
Can You Really Use a Blind as a Room Divider?
Yes. A suitable made-to-measure blind can be used to create a flexible visual divide between areas of a room.
The right option will depend on the size of your opening, how you use the space and what you’d like the divider to do.
For this project, we fitted Blind Screen across a large internal opening between two living spaces.
Blind Screen runs within a supporting frame, allowing the blind to span the opening from one side to the other and remain neatly positioned as it is opened and closed. This made it a practical option for creating a divide across a much wider opening.
When the Blind Screen is open, the two areas remain visually connected and the open-plan feel of the home is maintained.
When the homeowner wants to define the spaces more clearly, the blind can be drawn across the opening to create a visual divide between the rooms.
The result is a flexible room divider that can be used when needed without permanently changing the layout of the home.
Creating Two Spaces Without Permanently Changing the Room
The way we use our homes can change throughout the day.
There may be times when you want a large space to feel open and connected and others when you would prefer to create two more clearly defined areas.
Building a permanent wall changes the layout of the room, while internal doors can have a significant impact on a large opening and need to be considered as part of the wider design.
Using a made-to-measure blind as a room divider offers a different approach.
For this installation, the homeowner can leave the spaces open and connected when they want to, then draw the Blind Screen across the opening when they would prefer a clear visual divide.
It doesn’t turn the blind into a wall or a soundproof door. Instead, it gives the homeowner more flexibility over how the rooms look and feel.
A Room Divider That Is There When You Need It
One of the biggest advantages of this installation is how little impact the Blind Screen has on the room when it is open.
The photographs from the project show the blind fully open, partially drawn and completely closed.
When open, the large internal opening remains clear and the two spaces continue to feel connected.
As the blind is drawn across, the divide gradually becomes more defined.
When fully closed, the Blind Screen creates a clear visual separation between the rooms.
This ability to change the space is what makes the installation particularly interesting. The homeowner doesn’t have to decide whether the rooms should always be open-plan or permanently separated.
They can simply change the space depending on how they want to use it.
Could a Blind Room Divider Work in Your Home?
Every home and every opening is different, so not every blind will be suitable for use as a room divider.
However, if you have a large opening between two areas of your home, it may be worth exploring the made-to-measure options available.
A flexible room divider could be useful between a kitchen and living area, within a large open-plan room or where part of a room is used as a home office or play area.
The important question is what you want the divider to do.
Are you looking to create a visual separation between two areas? Do you want the option to make a large space feel more defined? Or do you simply want greater flexibility over how you use the room?
